Last week I read The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett. It is the Goldilocks story with a few twists set in the Arctic with Alooki and 3 polar bears. The children liked it and at the end we all did the Papa, Mama, and Baby Bear voices as the bears said bye-bye. Another bear book with beautiful blue and white illustrations and a sweet simple story is My Little Polar Bear by Claudia Rueda. I got both of these books from the St. Louis Public library.

On our Volunteer Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Volunteers-at-Ready-Readers/171798689505567), several volunteer readers suggested their favorite read-alouds. Stephanie's children enjoy listening to the books, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly and The Monster at the End of the Book." Ed found a great read-aloud book, The End, at the library. The End is a backwards book, that is, the first page is "and they lived happily ever after." Gloria's top five list include Please Baby Please, Eat Your Peas!, The Father Who Had 10 Children, Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea, and the Gingerbread Man. You can find these books at your local library or purchase them at our Ready Readers Amazon store, http://astore.amazon.com/wwwreadyrea03-20. What are your favorites?

The children I read to absolutely adore The Neighborhood Mother Goose. They took to the photography in this book right away, because they see children who look like they do, and they're in settings they can relate to.
Every week, after we finish reading a couple of picture books, weI read from this book. Usually, we'll do one or two new rhymes, but first, they want to re-read all those we've done before. They know and ask for most of the rhymes in this book now and really get a kick out of repeating the funniest ones. Lately, we've been doing tongue twisters too. They're working hard at saying the Peter Piper verse and roll over laughing when we do it faster.

On a cold, winter day, remember Jan Brett's classics to read to the children. The Mitten and The Three Snow Bears are my favorites.
